MEDALI KE-2 OLIMPIADE ASTRONOMI
Artikel ini terjadi tahun 2008, namun masih relevan untuk menggugah anak bangsa untuk terus berprestasi melengkapi medali olimpiade lainnya. Dia adalah Lorenz van Gugelberg Da Silva (18) di ajang International Olympiade Astronomy & Astrophysics (IOAA) 2008, dengan meyembahkan medali emas untuk Tim Indonesia A.
“Ini emas Olimpiade Astronomi kedua buat saya, sekaligus keikutsertaan yang terakhir,” kata Lorenz, seusai menerima medali emas IOAA ke-2 Tahun 2008 di Gedung Sasana Budaya Ganesa ITB Kota Bandung. Lorenz merupakan salah satu dari 4 pelajar Indonesia yang sukses meraih medali emas pada IOAA 2008 yang digelar di Bandung dan Lembang, 19-27/08/08.
Lajang berkulit legam kelahiran Sukoharjo, Jateng, 18 tahun lampau itu juga peraih medali emas pada IOAA 2007 yang digelar di Thailand. “Senang rasanya, meski 3 bulan bergelut dengan persiapan masuk kuliah, akhirnya bisa teratasi dan hasilnya memuaskan,” katanya.
Selepas membela Indonesia di ajang IOAA 2008, Lorenz kini konsentrasi masuk kuliah di Jurusan Elektro Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Meski termasuk siswa cemerlang, jebolan SMA Semesta Semarang itu menjadi salah satu dari ribuan pelajar yang bersaing masuk ITB melalui Ujian Seleksi Masuk (USM) ITB.
Meski senang astronomi, namun ia lebih memilih masuk elektro. Alhasil ia tidak dapat memanfaatkan fasilitas bea siswa setelah meraih medali emas itu. Pasalnya, bea siswa itu hanya diberikan kepada peraih medali emas IOAA 2008 asal Indonesia yang melanjutkan kuliah pada program astronomi.
“Meski masuk jurusan elektro, tapi saya tetap akan menekuni astronomi, karena merupakan salah satu yang saya senangi,” katanya. Sementara itu perjalanan Lorenz membela tim IOAA Indonesia dalam 2 tahun cukup unik. Sebelum ikut olimpiade astronomi, ia sempat bersaing untuk ikut tim olimpiade matematika.
Namun karena persaingan ketat, ia terpaksa `banting stir` ikut seleksi tim olimpiade astronomi. Dan pilihannya tidak meleset sekaligus dapat mempertahankan medali emas dalam dua event itu.
“Astronomi asyik juga, selama lomba saya banyak teman. Biar soalnya lebih susah dari tahun lalu, namun itu sangat menantang. Saya berharap tahun mendatang Tim Indonesia bisa tampil lebih baik lagi,” katanya. (FatchurR; bahan dari http://www.antara.co.id/view/?i=12198921…)
